Growing Up to Hear God | Jay Fesperman (3/3)

Those of us who have been or are parents remember how, when they were small, our kids wore their feelings “on their sleeves” so to speak. Now, as they grew older, their thoughts and attitudes became more subtle, more hidden, stuffed down inside. But if we were doing a thorough job, we knew them well enough to read their attitudes fairly well. Because, when the kids tried to camouflage their true reactions, they were put in judgement by the rules and regulations we had laid upon them. God says in His Word, “. . .My Word judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4: 12).

Want to hear God’s word for you like you did when you were a “babe in Christ”?

1.   Get your heart right towards those close to you.

John says, “Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.” (1 John 2: 10). Whenever the epistles speak of “brothers” they refer to all believers. But Jesus also had the audacity to say “love your enemies” as well. TRY IT! It will release your hearing problems when God is speaking. He says so often, “Why should I say anything else; I have said these things to you and you have not obeyed. Why need I say more?” OBEDIENCE opens our ears!

2.   Get your heart right towards God.

Maybe you think this should come first. Maybe so, but Jesus came to bring us to repentance, first of all, and we have more trouble, it seems, with our relatives than we do with God. John also says, “Whoever claims to LIVE in Him must walk as Jesus did!” (1 John 2: 6). Jesus also said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

3.   Yield up the spirit of INDEPENDENCE.

We absolutely must recognize and confess that we need one another. When we are dealing with SELF, we are functioning in SUBJECTIVITY. To come into OBJECTIVITY, we need brothers and sisters who will get us to come into total HONESTY. I am not independent; I am dependent on the Body of Christ to keep me connected to the Head.

4.   THEN, take the step of FAITH. . .AND trigger His GRACE.

Then watch God direct you by HIS PLAN. . .with correction, by GRACE; with direction, by GRACE; with approval, by GRACE!
