God’s highest purpose for man is. . .”FULFILL OTHERS!” Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.” This is the first and greatest requirement of God’s law. And the SECOND IS LIKE IT: “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF!” All other laws hang on these two.
In order for man to grow up into this kind of citizen, God knew he must be brought forth in such a way that he would be TOTALLY DEPENDENT on other people. A human baby comes into the world totally devoid of the capacity to supply his own needs in response to the natural laws inherent in his being. Without a total contribution from others than himself, he will surely die. So, as he grows up into maturity, most of the support systems are governed and controlled by other people; so “God set the solitary in families.” He establishes us in relationships with others; father and mother, brothers and sisters. As these relatives – members of our family – nurture us out of our state of helplessness and our self-gratifying nature, we learn how to live. As we mature, we develop the capability of following the natural laws and, equally important, we come to see our roles of responsibility as members of a family, imparting life to others. We learn how to RECEIVE life; therefore, we learn how to GIVE life. . . God’s basic, most elementary structure of society then is the FAMILY.
There are sociological and political forces today that seek to say one of two things: either we are meant to be totally free of all encumbrances of relationship and to function as a totally self-determining individual, or we are meant to be gathered together into a single society, governed by a small group of other humans. But God put us into family to bring us to maturity, under the guidance and direction of mature men and women of God. They, of course, must have some to maturity themselves so they can impart maturity to us.
There is LIFE in the cells that come together from our parents through their physical relationship. When these two sources of LIFE “become one”, our physical being results. As the husband’s LIFE-CELL was GIVEN, and the wife’s LIFE-CELL was GIVEN, a totally new LIFE was formed. Physical LIFE flowed out of TWO who fulfilled each other and NEW LIFE came forth!
And so our relationships – our families – SCHOOL us into maturity. And maturity brings us to the place of RESPONSIBILITY. We grow up to the having MORE LIFE – “a more ABUNDANT life” – than we need for ourself, so we begin to GIVE IT AWAY. And the more we give, the less we need!
This principle functions at every place of need, from conception through birth, on into full physical AND spiritual maturity. God’s Word says it in so many places and in so many ways:
“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak. . .each of us should please his neighbor for his good. . .to build him up!” (Romans 16: 1).
“Offer your bodies as living sacrifices!” (Romans 12: 1).
“Carry each other’s burdens and in this way, you will fulfill the LAW OF CHRIST!” (Galatians 6: 2).
“They gave to anyone as he had need. . .they shared everything they had.” (Acts 2:45; 32).
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility, consider others better than yourself!” (Philippians 2: 45).
