God’s genetic code (1/3) | Jay Fesperman

“For You did form my inward parts: You did knit me together in my Mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).

In His plan for all Mankind, God established a marriage covenant for man and woman. He commanded them to “Be fruitful and multiply”. And there was developed a single cell within man’s body which joined together with a single cell from woman’s body, and “the two became one flesh”. Thus, you were formed – knit together – by God’s Plan. Gradually, those two cells which had become ONE multiplied for several weeks, and a new person (YOU) were made a fully developed human being. Virtually all of your physical attributes and much of your behavior was written into the genetic code by these two cells becoming ONE.

Thou knowest me through and through. My body is no mystery to You, how I was secretly kneaded into shape and patterned in the depths of the earth. Thou didst see my limbs unformed in the world, and in Thy book they are all recorded; day by day they were fashioned. Not one of them was late in growing” (Psalm 139:15-16). Another version says, “All the days of my life were written before they ever took shape, when as yet there was none of them”.

From the two original cells, one from man, one from woman, there was produced millions of millions of cells, forming fingers and eyes, heart and liver, hands and feet, the inner and outer ears, brains and nerves, lungs and stomach, all from the same chemistry. And amazingly, this reproductive process doesn’t end at birth. Even after our bodies are fully developed, it goes on and on. Each day of our life our flesh gives up millions of cells, to be replaced by newly produced cells for the rest of our natural life. “I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (verse 14).

Yes, we are fearfully and wonderfully made! We have blue eyes and blond hair because it was in the code of our parents’ cells. Or they are brown and brown. We are tall or short, because God’s genetic code declared it BEFORE the two cells came together. And very often we can see some physical traits from both our parents. In infancy our granddaughter, for a month, would look like her dad. The next month she was beginning to look “just like our daughter at the same age”.

Normally, we become a replica of both the man and woman from whose unity in the flesh we were produced. Now, going back to the earlier verses of this 139th Psalm, we see other phrases: “O Lord, You have searched me thoroughly and have known me. You understand my thoughts afar off”. Matthew says, “Jesus knew what they, the lawyers were thinking” (9:4), and that Jesus knew man so well that He needed no evidence from others, for He Himself could tell what was in man. HE KNOWS OUR THOUGHTS BEFORE WE DO! “You are acquainted with all my ways” (verse 3b). HE KNOWS OUR ACTIONS BEFORE WE DO! “There in not a word in my tongue [still unspoken], but lo, O Lord, You know it altogether”. HE KNOWS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO SAY BEFORE WE DO!

God planned me! You were written in His book! All the days of your life were written – sealed in – before you were conceived! But something went wrong! The Psalmist has said, “From birth they have taken to devious ways; liars no sooner born than they go astray” (58:3), and “In iniquity I was brought to birth, and my Mother conceived me in sin” (51:5).
